I bet you didn’t expect yet another new app 🙂
Ok, it’s only a widget. But I’d say it’s quite nice to have on your homescreen. It displays the feast or the saint of the day, according to the Julian Orthodox Calendar. The text is all in Russian, and so are the selected saints.
It may sound trivial for some, but have in mind that it doesn’t require internet connection, everything is programmed and contained in the app. So, it’ll work just fine if you are on Sinai, or Mount Athos (actually, there it will also be in concordance regarding the calendar which is used :-)) and have neither wi-fi nor GSM signal.
The app is available only on the Android Market, at least for the moment.
My apps are under my account on the Android Market, Fast Dialer, as well as the Thoughts of St Theophan. Concerning the later, I made a free version of it, which has some limitations, like not being able to share the text, nor to move the app to the SD card. But, all the texts are available. And if you want to say “thanks”, spare a buck for the full version 🙂

Announcing the new version of the Thoughts for Each day of the Year app. It’s one of these updates that take a lot of time and effort, but only one line in the changelog: “Hyphenation correction”. As noted by Ilene Strizver:
The difference between “just okay” typography and professional-level typography is usually in the details – like hyphenation. Often overlooked, proper hyphenation is essential for optimum readability and getting your message across.
The automated hyphenation was not working properly – it made lots of mistakes, which resulted in not so good “gray” level of the text.
But now, a proper dictionary (mainly Merriam-Webster) has been used for the hyphenation, and the results are very obvious, at least for my eyes 🙂
Other than that, upon a suggestion by the Strannik, the app can be installed on the SD card, and free some of your device’s main memory, although the app is less than 600KB, i.e. not so demanding. Have in mind, however, that in case you move it on the SD card, you won’t be able to use the widget. And, of course, installing on SD card is possible since Android 2.2, but not in the earlier versions.
Through the “Share” option you can send the text to your friends via e-mail, text message, or by any other means available on your device.
Facebook – a different story. If you have a Facebook app on your phone, you’ll get an option to share on Facebook via the “Share” option, but most likely – that will not work. I found out that it is due to some limitations of the Facebook app and although they’ve promised to fix that, who knows if and when it would be done.
Thus, use the “Post on FB” button to directly post St Theophan’s daily contemplation to your Facebook wall!
Here’s a new app. The full name would be: Thoughts for Each Day of the Year According to the Daily Church Readings from the Word of God By St. Theophan the Recluse. Quite a long title, but it says it all.
The texts are included, so no internet connection is required.
The app is available from the Amazon Appstore.
Enjoy!
Shortly, about the new features in v.3.1.0. The two most important things are: 1) Filtering of the call / message log by type and 2) Selection of the accounts in use.
By filtering the calls and messages by type (you can select what the log should show) it’s really easy to get a clearer overview of, for example, all the missed calls you have. This was a requested feature, and it’s quite useful.
The second feature was also requested, even from the earliest versions of the app, and was even implemented once, but since the account management was introduced in Android 2.1, the solution I came up with for earlier versions of Android didn’t function well on all devices. This time, the feature is implemented only for Android 2.1 and above devices, so everything is “by the book”.
Fast Dialer by default searches through both names and numbers. But, it was thoroughly explained to me, that this may cause not only confusion, but also unwanted expenses. Namely, Krakozawr (to whom I’m also grateful for the localization on Belarusian) wrote that often, when he searched by name and pressed the call button, he ended calling a wrong number (for example, an international number, instead of a mobile), because the same contact was found both by name and by (the unwanted for frequent dialing) international number.
Well, yes, this doesn’t happen so often, because most people are used to type three characters in order to find the desired contact. But, when I added an option to turn off the “search by number” (this option is in the Functionality tweaks submenu), suddenly, the search became much faster – as only 2 chars were necessary in order to find the contact you want to dial. And, of course, you’ll be dialing the desired, i.e. the default number.
Well, that’s nice, but should you go deep into the settings in order to be able to search by number again? No 🙂 Just turn on the long forgotten “search all numbers” option via a long press on the blue # button – and quickly find the number you are after. Neat, isn’t it?
Here’s the new version which includes several significant features. First, the optimization of the app’s operation – it now loads and works faster.
Second – themes. Long awaited, at last implemented. Eight new, nice themes. And still, the app weights ~350k, much less than the competitive apps (at least the ones I’ve heard of). Use the poll on the right side to vote for your favourite.
And the third thing I find important are the images for the different phone types. The labels are small, and it takes a moment to read them. With the images its faster and easier to comprehend which number you received a call from, or which number you’d dial when pressing the call button.
With all these fancy stuff, maybe I should rename the app to Nice dialer 🙂
Just one note: have in mind that the size and the colour of the letters on the dialpad can be changed for all themes equally. Also, the red digits’ background in the “Ms Claire” theme means that the “wildcard mode” search is on (and that is available in all themes too).
